Coluracetam Solubility

Coluracetam’s Solubility Properties

Chemical structure of coluracetam.Chemical structure of coluracetam.

Coluracetam is a racetam-derivative that enhances high-affinity choline uptake (HUAC), resulting in a net increase in acetylcholine synthesis in the brain. Coluracetam is available from BlueBrainBoost, Nootropics Depot and a few other reliable nootropics vendors (like PowderCity).

A quick inspection of coluracetam’s chemical structure reveals that it has two amide groups and is a relatively complex molecule.

Because coluracetam contains few polar or charged functional groups (e.g., carboxylic acid, hydroxyl), it is only sparingly soluble in water. Moreover, water is an inappropriate solvent for coluracetam because the molecule is so sensitive to hydrolysis (degradation by water).

coluracetam-propylene-glycolBecause coluracetam contains few polar or charged functional groups (e.g., carboxylic acid, hydroxyl), it is only sparingly soluble in water. Moreover, water is an inappropriate solvent for coluracetam because the molecule is so sensitive to hydrolysis (degradation by water).

But coluracetam is soluble in a mixture of ethanol and propylene glycol or ethanol and vegetable glycerin. Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine are solvents commonly used in health care and cosmetic products. Both are safe for consumption, though vegetable glycerin is generally regarded as safer to consume in larger quantities.  Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin (or a mixture of the two) are also frequently used to make the nicotine-containing e-liquid used in electronic cigarettes.

Coluracetam is soluble in a propylene glycol/ethanol mixture because these solvents are less polar (or more lipophilic) than water.

I'm interested in nutrition, nootropics, and javascript. I'm a firm believer in getting really good at one thing.
